 Internet & World Wide Web

The internet has become a crucial part of peoples' everyday lives. The internet is a global network that connects computers and other devices all over the world. This allows for access to almost any information and the ability to communicate with people globally who also have internet connection. This all started in 1973 with computer scientists, Vinton Cerf and Bob Kahn. This creation was made to allow computers to communicate through the APRAnet (Advanced Research Projects Agency). Today, the internet is used for e-mail, social media, managing finances, shopping, and much more.

On the other hand, the World Wide Web is an information retrieval service of the internet. The creation of the World Wide Web began in 1989 by Tim Berners-lee. The purpose of this creation was to allow for the sharing of information between scientists around the world. Today, the World Wide Web can be accessed through a browser. This then provides a system of linked pages, programs, and files that can be looked at by users.

While the internet and World Wide Web may seem identical, they work together to allow for users to retrieve information. Through the World Wide Web people can access web pages over the internet. The World Wide Web is just a portion of the internet, and they are not interchangeable terms.

The first ever website created by Tim Berners-Lee in August 1991. The website was created at CERN which was a European nuclear research agency. Interestingly, the first website can still be found today at http://info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html.

Bluetooth & Wi-Fi

Hedy Lamarr was known as an actress but also played a big role in making the smartphone possible. She invented a form a frequency hopping which is used in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp wrote a song about the famous actress and inventor titled, "This is a Song for Miss Hedy Lamarr". The song is a tribute to Hedy Lamarr that describes her life story and struggles while being both praised and rejected by society.

Jaap Haartsen laid the foundations for the Bluetooth system in 1994. Jim Karachi suggested Bluetooth as a temporary code name and later compared the name to King Harald Bluetooth. The king was known for uniting Scandinavia and their goal was to use Bluetooth to unite the cellular and PC industries with a short-range wireless link. The Bluetooth logo is a bind rune merging Harald's initials and has become very well known.

There were several people who helped invent Wi-Fi. Some of the inventors include John O'Sullivan, George Antheil, Cees Links, and Terence Percival. Wi-Fi was first released in 1997 and has been continuously modified since. The first products to be wireless were under the name WaveLAN. Later on the term Wi-Fi was created because of the word's resonance with hi-fi.
